What is Advisory?
The Goals of Advisory:
What does Advisory “look like”?
Every student is assigned to one or two teachers that serve as their advisors. The advisory groups, which are organized by grade level, meet weekly. Each week, the advisory group works on aspects of the Student’s Success Plan, which encompasses lessons in the following domains:
Advisory culminates in the Capstone. What is the Capstone?
In completing the Berlin High School Senior Capstone Experience, students synthesize classroom study, academic knowledge, and community connections, by creating real-world, authentic applications of their learning through a planned project. As such, students find, use, and manipulate content knowledge to learn, solve problems, create, and think critically for a lifetime.
When does Advisory occur?
Advisory meets for 45 minutes each week as part of the school day, with other classes being shortened by only seven minutes to create time for the advisory period. Each quarter, the day on which advisory is scheduled changes so that the same classes are not consistently affected. The meeting days are:
· Quarter 1: Tuesdays
· Quarter 2: Fridays
· Quarter 3: Wednesdays
· Quarter 4: Fridays
The Goals of Advisory:
- To develop and maintain relationships between and among advisees and the advisor;
- To help advisees identify and develop the necessary attitudes, behaviors and skills to succeed in school, college, and life;
- To provide advisees with the resources and information necessary to make thoughtful decisions about the future;
- To help advisees reflect upon and monitor their academic progress through a formal conferencing structure.
